Helpful Terminology to Know!

Awning - a stationary or retractable frame with fabric or metal that is meant to offer protection from the sun and from precipitation. Different from shades.

Canvas - a mostly opaque material, usually made of 100% acrylic. It is stretched tightly over a frame, allowing water to run off.

Shade cloth - a knitted fabric that provides a good measure of UV protection and allows some air to flow through. It is mainly used on shade sails/sail shades. It does not offer protection from precipitation and generally cannot handle snow loads.

Valance - the scalloped or straight piece of fabric that hangs off the bottom of an awning. Rhymes with balance.

Braid - a woven acrylic trim material that goes on the bottom of the valance. It can blend in with the canvas or contrast for a richer look.

Sign band - also known as a stationary valance. A built in valance that will not blow around in the wind. It can be a different color from the rest of the awning. This is where lettering usually goes on commercial applications.

Width - the horizontal measurement of an awning parallel with the structure it is attached to.

Projection - the measurement of how far the awning will come out from the structure.

Height - or wall height. The vertical measurement of how tall the awning itself is.

Cleaning Your Canvas Awning

To keep your canvas awning looking it’s best, follow these cleaning tips:

• Brush off loose dirt.

• Hose down.

If the awning still doesn’t look clean:

• Prepare a cleaning solution of water and mild soap such as Woolite® or Dawn® dishwashing liquid.

• Use a soft bristle brush to clean.

• Allow cleaning solution to soak into the fabric.

• Rinse thoroughly until all soap residue is removed.

• Air dry.

Always be safe and exercise extreme caution when working from ladders.
